Hastings Hawks Baseball

Memorial Weekend!

Memorial day is the perfect day for baseball. Why? Because we can. Because we have the freedom to do so many wonderful things in this great country thanks to the many brave men and women that have given their lives defending that freedom. This memorial weekend, between the Brats, Burgers, Camping, Baseball, Soccer, Adult Beverages, Bonfires, Fishing, Boating, Swimming, and so many other wonderful activities that can be done. Please take a moment to look to the sky and say a little thank you to over 1.3 million people that gave their lives so we could do those very things.

We hope to see you at the ballpark on Monday at 2:00 PM as we take on the Hampton Cardinals in our Annual Memorial Day Classic. We'll have the grill hot and ready to please your tastebuds and save you the hassle of prepping food, Carter Ekstrom will throw out the first pitch in honor of his great grand father Luther Quale - Ret Army and all the others that are no longer with us to enjoy those freedoms.

Hawks AT Randolph Railcats!

May 28th, 2:00pm, 2017 - Randolph MN

Memorial Day weekend, the sun is shining, the temp is just crossing 70 and... and it's WINDY! Holy windy day today, but my it was a B E A YOOTEEFUL day for baseball.

The Hawks took it on the road for the first time this season to face the Railcats for the second time in 9 days. In the first meeting, the Hawks won 5-1, could they get the regular season sweep?

Hawks vs Eagan Bandits!

May 24th, 7:30pm, 2017 - Hastings MN

Eagan came to town and we knew they would be a difficult team to play as they were in the State playoffs last year. What we didn't know was just how FAST they are. Many of the balls we put in to play would have been great hits on slower teams, but not these guys. The lone RBI for the Hawks was Jordan Peoples (#10) in the 8th.

The next Hawks action is Sunday 5/28 AT Randolph followed up by our Annual Memorial Day game on Monday 5/29 at Veteran's Park against the Hampton Cardinals.

Full replay can be watched here.

Hawks vs Randolp Railcats!

May 19th, 7:30pm, 2017 - Hastings MN

Finally after all the wet weather, we get to see some baseball! It was a clear black night, clear white moon and chilly! The game started out with the guys being a little rusty. Starting pitcher Eric Weber (#32) pitched 5 strong innings logging 3 stikeouts, 1 walk and no earned runs on 82 pitches. The 2nd inning is where the rust for the team really showed when 2 Errors and a passed ball allow the lone score for the Railcats.

River Falls Fighting Fish game Postponed.

Elmwood Expos put up a fight!

May 12th, 7:30pm 2017 - Hastings MN

Simply put...

What started out as a pitchers duel for the first few innings, moved to a potential blow out with 6 runs in the 5th and 4 in the 6th for the Hawks. The crews were starting to clean up thinking the 10 run mercy rule would be activated after the 7th with the Hawks leading 12-2. By the end of the game, 432 pitches will have been thrown, 112 plate appearances happened, 7 batters would get hit by pitches and no one will believe those stats. But first lets rewind a little!

They should have brought Cheesecurds...

May 7th, 2:00pm 2017 - Hastings MN

The Ellsworth Hubbers refused to bring cheese curds and ultimately, it cost them the game. Spencer Diedrich (#18) was heard in the dugout talking to Manager Shawn Matson (#2) after the Hubbers tied it up in the 8th, "They didn't bring the curds, you gotta let me pitch Moon, you just gotta!"  Matson did just that. He put Diedrich in to start the extra innings and he went a quick 1,2,3, striking out the final batter he faced. In the bottom of the 10th, Diedrich was pacing, hoping to finish his revenge when Ben Bundschu grounded into a 5-3 out. The next batter Jordan Jeske (#17) hit a routine grounder to the second baseman, it looked like it was going to be an easy out, but he bobbled the ball in transition allowing Jeske to reach on an error. The DH, Jaryd Marks (#39) hit a hard line drive to left off the 3rd pitch he saw and advanced Jeske to 2nd. That's when Diedrich said, "I'll teach you not to share your cheese curds." The first pitch he saw was almost a carbon copy of Marks' hit. A hard line drive to left and Jeske the Jet took off from 2nd. The throw home was made as Jeske was still 50 feet out, but it was wide to the first base side, so Jordan scored easily. Game over, Hawks win 7-6 in walk-off fashion in the 10th.

When approached after the game, the Hubbers manager simply said, "We'll bring cheese curds next time." and he refused to comment any further.

Keep in mind, this is a test and it's pretty much an uncontrolled environtment with lots of chatter going on around us. It may sound hectic at first, but we think it will be fun for all involved.

Hawks Fall in season opener

May 5th, 2017 - Hastings, MN.

"Sorry folks, we won't be selling beer this year at Veterans park, We lost the opener" - Brian Schommer

Yes, it's true, The Hawks fell to the Hawks 6-3 on an opening night that started out with an amazing performance by the Pinecrest Elementary Choir singing the National Anthem. Sgt Nathan Meszaros of the MN National Guard delivered a strike for the ceremonial first pitch of the season, and the weather was PERFECT!

The Spring Valley Hawks spoiled the opening night for Hastings with a long, 4 run inning in the 4th. Hawks pitcher Nick Horsch (#9) said after the game "My legs just ran out of gas, I should have known better with it being the first game of the year." His defense did not help him out with a couple costly errors. "It's our first game, unfortunately, mistakes are gonna happen, you just hope they don't cost you much." Skipper Shawn Matson said after the game. Until the 4th, Horsch was pitching great. He only allowed 2 hits, both in the 2nd with one of them rocketing off his left knee. "It didn't feel good, that's for sure," he said in the post game interview, "But it's fine now."

Hastings had the early lead after Jordan Jeske (#17) scored from third on a line drive by Spencer Diedrich (#18). That play was set up when Ben Bundschu (#25) hit a lead off single up the middle, Jeske reached on a fielder's choice, beating out the Double Play, then advanced to third on a single to right by Jaryd Marks (#39)

Horsch finished the game with 3 strike-outs, 1 walk, 2 earned runs on 56 pitches.
Diedrich handled the middle innings, with 6k's, 3 walks and no earned runs on 68.
Marks closed out the game stiking out 3, walking none and allowing no earned runs.

Offensive notables for Hastings:
Curt Caneff went 3 for 4 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.
Diedrich was 3 for 5, 1 RBI and 1 run scored.

The landscaping, simply amazing!

The city parks department helped us secure the needed materials and a wonderful donation by the Weber Family helped cover our costs of the day.
